In everyday life, we are certainly familiar with the use of some metallic and non-metallic elements. If we pay attention to many objects around us, such as kitchen utensils, jewelry, to home decorations that contain metallic and  non-metallic elements.

The element itself is a single substance that can be broken down into other substances, even though it has used simple chemical reactions. Based on their physical and chemical properties, elements are divided into 3 groups, namely metallic elements, non-metallic elements, and metalloid or semi-metallic elements.

So what are the differences between the 3 groups of elements? Let’s look at the discussion!

Metal Element

In chemistry, a metal or metal is a material or an element, compound, or alloy that is usually hard, opaque, lustrous, and has good electrical and thermal conductivity. Metal elements have the following properties:

  • The state of matter at room temperature around 250C is solid, except mercury and cesium are liquids.
  • Is a good conductor or conductor of electricity.
  • Shiny when rubbed.
  • It is malleable and stretchable.

There are several examples of metal elements that we often encounter, including aluminum (Al), iron (ferrum/Fe), gold (aurum/Au), copper (cuprum), silver (argentum), nickel (Ni), and mercury (hydrargirum). .

Non-Metal Element

As the name implies, this material has no properties and is even completely different from metals. Where, non-metallic elements have some of the following properties or elements:

At room temperature, substances exist in the form of solids, liquids, and gases.

Elements in the form of substances are generally brittle or brittle (easily broken), for example carbon.

Is an insulator or does not conduct electricity except for graphite or carbon and is not shiny even if rubbed except for diamonds.

Examples of gaseous non-metallic elements are oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), neon (Ne), and helium (He). Meanwhile, the solids are sulfur (S), carbon (C), phosphorus (P), silicon (Si), and iodine (I). The gaseous nonmetallic element is helium.

Semimetallic Elements (Metaloids)

The latter elements are semimetallic elements, which are better known as metalloids. Metalloid elements are elements that have transitional properties from metal to non-metal so that they have some metallic and non-metallic properties.

Metalloid elements are generally semiconductors, so they are widely used as materials for making electronic components such as transistors, ICs, and diodes. Examples of metalloid elements are silicon (Si), boron (B), and arsenic (As).
